going back a little bit, obviously it bears mentioning what happened in newtown, connecticut, the unimaginable tragedy that everybody's been talking about nationally. i think it's important that everybody take notice that the teachers at that school and the officers that responded did so as we've been training since columbine also here in san francisco and i think were it not for the heroic efforts of both the teachers and officers that that tragedy would have been way worse. the teachers, instead of evacuating and emptying those kids into the hallway, secured in place which kept them safe. actually it cost some of the teachers their lives, god bless them, and then the police officers as you saw them come on scene went straight into the school, which is exactly what san francisco police officers would do when there's the immediate imnepblt danger of serious danger of death, active shooter we'll go straight in. it's our job to put ourselves in harm's way and the cops in connecticut did that. on a very different note -- oh, i'm sorry -- we will be reinitiating our active shooter training that mo

david, where exactly are you in newtown? >> wolf, i'm standing directly in front of the firehouse right now. and that's been essentially used as sort of a makeshift holding place. for a lot of these families and children and parents who essentially just are trying to cope with what has transpired, i can count probably at least half a dozen emergency vehicles. so it is still very active scene down here. helicopters flying overhead, fbi, atf and local and state officials are all on scene as is the media here, as families walk out. many people tried to speak with them, but many are just inconsolable. you see people walking out, parents clutching their children, tears in their eyes, speaking on cell phones and just trying to convey the gravity of the situation here. and i had an opportunity to speak with a local teacher, not a teacher at the elementary school where the shooting took place, but in the nearby school system and she said the people move here, often for the schools, so you have people coming from in and around the st

coming up we'll take you back live to newtown, connecticut. we'll hear what it has been like for the students there who went back to school and what is complicating the investigation to figure out why the gunman did what he did. >> i can't imagine heading back to school. >>> time now 5:39. sal is covering traffic. where you starting? >> we are starting this morning with in fact i forgot. there we go. starting on highway 4 bay point. sometimes my brain it was there and just a second ago. i had to read it off the screen. let's go to highway 4 in bay point. highway 4 the traffic is a little slower coming up to the willow pass grade. no major problems coming into antioch. bay bridge toll plaza some of that is backed up. you can see traffic some day some point will start to get lighter toward the morning commute. i don't know if it will be today but it will be by the end of the week. then the morning commute is looking good on the peninsula. we have been watching 101 and 280. again it's really cold out there. be careful you may run into black ice.
